We sat down with Raynor Pepper, Assistant Manager at Burnley Markets, for a quick Q&A to find out what makes Burnley Market such a special place to shop, the hidden gems visitors can discover and what’s coming up over the coming months.
Tell us a little about yourself and your role as Assistant Manager at Burnley Markets.
My name is Raynor Pepper, and I’m proud to be the Assistant Market Manager at Burnley Markets. One of the things I enjoy most about the role is the variety – no two days are ever the same. From supporting our traders and helping new businesses establish themselves, to organising events and ensuring the market runs smoothly day-to-day, there is always something happening. What really makes Burnley Market special, though, are the people. We have a fantastic community of traders and loyal customers, and it’s incredibly rewarding to be part of a market that continues to play such an important role in the heart of the town.
For anyone who hasn’t visited Burnley Markets for a while, what makes now a great time to come and explore?
There has never been a better time to visit Burnley Market. We offer a fantastic mix of independent businesses, with everything from fresh food and international cuisine to fashion, gifts, specialist retailers, and essential services all under one roof. Whether you’re looking to pick up everyday essentials, enjoy a meal with friends, or simply browse and discover something new, there is something for everyone. Combined with great value, friendly service and a welcoming atmosphere, Burnley Market remains one of the town’s most vibrant shopping destinations.
Burnley Markets is full of fantastic independent traders – are there any hidden gems or stalls you think more people should discover?
That’s one of the things I love most about Burnley Market – there are hidden gems around every corner. You can pop in for one thing and end up discovering so much more. Whether it’s the town’s largest haberdashery store, having prescription glasses made in under an hour, treating yourself to a haircut, or finding specialist products you didn’t even know were available locally, there’s always something that catches your eye.
What makes the market special is the mix of independent businesses and the people behind them. Our traders are incredibly knowledgeable, passionate about what they do, and always happy to help. I’d encourage visitors to take their time, have a wander, and strike up a conversation. You’ll often leave with something you weren’t expecting to find – and that’s part of the magic of visiting Burnley Market.
There’s always something happening at the market. What events or activities have you got coming up that visitors should look out for?
We’ve got an exciting programme of FREE activities planned throughout the summer holidays, with something for all ages to enjoy. Between 11am and 3pm, visitors can drop in and take part in arts and crafts sessions, board games, guitar lessons, podcasting and broadcasting workshops with Radio Burnley’s Liz at Lunch, as well as darts and Nerf shooting activities.
Whether you’re looking to learn a new skill, get creative, or simply have fun with family and friends, there’s plenty to get involved with throughout the summer.
Alongside our holiday activities, we continue to host a variety of popular events throughout the year, including our Record Fairs, Bric-a-Brac Markets and special events such as Top Rope Wrestling, which regularly attract visitors from across the region and add to the vibrant atmosphere of the market.
We’re also already planning our Christmas programme, which promises to be bigger and better than ever. Visitors can look forward to festive entertainment, family activities and, of course, the return of Santa’s Grotto, where the big man from the North Pole will once again be welcoming children and families throughout the festive season.
In addition, we’ll be bringing the festive spirit into the town centre with our Christmas Market, taking place on Saturday 14 November 2026 as part of Burnley’s Christmas Lights Switch-On Day, and again on 19 December 2026. Visitors can browse a range of seasonal stalls, enjoy the festive atmosphere and find unique gifts while supporting local traders and independent businesses.
What do you think makes Burnley Markets such a special part of the town and community?
Burnley Market has been at the heart of the town since 1257 and remains an important part of local life today. For generations, it has provided opportunities for local businesses to thrive while offering residents access to quality goods, services, and fresh food. More than just a place to shop, it is a community hub where people meet, socialise and support local businesses. It combines a rich history with a vibrant present, making it a place that continues to bring people together and contribute to the identity and pride of Burnley.
