Many of us have a collection of old family photographs that we have never dedicated time to organising and dating. This August, Brandon Taylorian, an Associate Lecturer from the University of Lancashire in Preston, will be hosting a series of workshops in libraries in East Lancashire teaching attendees how to date, organise and preserve their antique photographs. Packed with interactive activities, practical information and a historical lecture, the workshops will tell you all you need to know about nineteenth and early-twentieth century photographs.
You will get an opportunity to chat with fellow family historians and to apply Brandon’s method of dating antique photographs so bring your own to the session. There will also be time to ask Brandon questions during the session.
Each attendee will be given a free copy of The Handbook of Antique Photographs that Brandon has created and published in 2024 so you can continue applying his method in your own time.
Brandon’s lecture will cover the early history of photography in the nineteenth century, providing the necessary context to date photographs . The topics covered in the interactive session will include mount types (e.g. carte de visite, cabinet card, daguerreotype) as well as Victorian fashion, tastes and customs.
Don’t worry if you don’t own antique photographs or prefer not to bring your own to the workshop because there will be many samples provided on the tables from Brandon’s own collection that you can date to practice the method.
All attendees are encouraged to bring the following to the workshop:
- Any antique family photographs they own (any photograph pre-WW2 is acceptable) so that you can get the most out of the sessions.
- A pen or pencil for jotting down notes on Log Sheets for each photograph which will be provided during the session.
FREE TO ALL ATTENDEES BUT BOOKING ESSENTIAL AS PLACES ARE LIMITED.
