With longer days and warm weather fast approaching, it’s the perfect time to explore Burnley’s fantastic outdoor destinations, bask in the sun, and indulge in some seasonal shopping. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, here’s your guide to making the most of a sunny summer’s day in our Lancashire town…

Enjoying the Sunshine: Outdoor Activities

  1. Relax in Thompson Park

Thompson Park is a stunning summer destination in Burnley. A popular and beautiful Edwardian Park located close to the town centre, this summer’s day out features ornamental gardens, a boating lake, and even a miniature railway! Pack a picnic and enjoy a leisurely day lounging on the grass or grab a bite to eat from the popular Boathouse Café. From taking a paddle boat out on the lake, having a splash in the paddling pool or riding the miniature train, there’s so much for families to enjoy at one of Burnley’s beloved parks.

  1. Take a stroll along Leeds and Liverpool Canal Walk

Take a scenic stroll or bike ride along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The towpaths are perfect for a sunny day, offering picturesque views of the water and surrounding countryside. Don’t forget to stop by the Weavers’ Triangle Visitor Centre to learn about the canal’s history and Burnley’s industrial heritage.

  1. Grab a coffee alfresco-style with Cosy Coffee

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy al fresco dining and Cosy Coffee is the ideal spot for relaxing in the sun. Located in the heart of the town centre on St James’ Street, this family-run business serves both hot and cold beverages and if you’re feeling peckish, there’s lots of snack and treats to choose from too!

Summer Shopping in Burnley

  1. Charter Walk Shopping Centre

Charter Walk Shopping Centre is the heart of retail in Burnley, offering a mix of high street brands and independent shops. Look out for summer sales and promotions to update your wardrobe with the latest seasonal trends. From fashion to beauty products, you’ll find everything you need for a stylish summer.

  1. Burnley Market Hall

For a unique shopping experience, make sure to check out Burnley Market Hall. Filled with unique, independent stalls, you’ll find a variety of goods, handmade crafts, and unique clothing items.

Taking place Saturday 27th July, Burnley Market Hall is also set for a fun indoor car boot fair. Make sure to come along and grab yourself a bargain from 9am because entry is FREE. There will also be a Record Fair on August 31st, where visitors can shop a variety of collectible vinyls and music memorabilia.

The market is also ready to host fabulous FREE crafting sessions this summer, taking place every Thursday during the school summer holidays.  Open for drop-in sessions from 11am – 3pm, children of all ages are invited to get creative, with the first week themed around ‘Adventures and Explorers’.

 Summer Events and Festivals

  1. Burnley Canal Festival

Held annually in late summer, the Burnley Canal Festival is a vibrant celebration featuring live music, performances, food stalls, and activities along the canal. Set to return on Sunday 25th August, this festival is a fantastic way to experience the community spirit of Burnley.

  1. Summer Concerts at Burnley Mechanics Theatre

Burnley Mechanics Theatre hosts a variety of summer concerts and events. Check their schedule or head to our events page for details on special summer shows that make the most of the season’s pleasant weather.

Rainy Days

It wouldn’t be an English summer without the occasional downpour, and when there is, head to Reel Cinema at Pioneer Place.

Free Children’s activities

As well as the free craft sessions at Burnley Market on Thursdays, Burnley BID and Charter Walk are also planning some fantastic free children’s activities in the summer holidays!

Every Friday from August 2nd there will be some activity on either St James’s Street or Charter Walk, hosted by the BID. Activities confirmed include Circus Workshops and Crazy Golf.

And at Charter Walk, there’s something planned every Wednesday, starting on July 31st with a Cook Stars Cake & Biscuit decorating workshop, followed by performances and meet & greets, where children can meet characters from Sleeping Beauty, Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty & The Beast! 

There will also be some a variety of rides for kids to enjoy, which will be in Burnley town centre on August 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th. It will be £2 per ride or £8 for 5 rides. These will be subject to appropriate weather conditions.
