SUMMARY:To the Ends of the Earth: Antarctic Exploration
DESCRIPTION:In 1904\, Lieutenant Armitage gave a lecture at Burnley Mechani
cs Institute about his experiences on Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Discov
ery Expedition to Antarctica 1901-1904. More than 120 years later\, Julian
Evans returns to the Mechanics’ lecture tradition with a fascinating ex
ploration of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration and its legacy today.
\n\nThe lecture will feature a special Magic Lantern Show\, using an elect
ric lantern similar to the one used by Lt Armitage in 1904\, alongside ori
ginal glass slides by Herbert Ponting\, photographer on the later Terra No
va Expedition of 1910–1913.\n\nJulian will explore the story of the Disc
overy Expedition\, the Terra Nova Expedition and his own family connection
to it — his grandfather was in command of the Terra Nova expedition fol
lowing Captain Scott’s death. He will also share photographs and video f
rom his own journey to Cape Evans\, Antarctica\, in 2013\, undertaken to c
ommemorate the centenary of the expedition.\n\nThe lecture will also consi
der Antarctica today\, including its changing environment and the impact o
f global warming.\n\nPart of Heritage Open Days at Burnley Mechanics.
